Ericsson, a leader in wireless technology, said it will license its mobile phone technology to other manufacturers of phones and wireless devices.
Ericsson plans to license complete component specifications, printed circuit-board layouts and software. It also will help customize products for customers’ devices. These will use General Packet Radio Service and 3-G technology that will offer faster download speeds for mobile phones, laptops and hand-held devices.
Ericsson did not give an estimated value for the licensing deal. An initial client will be a 50-50 joint venture formed with Japan’s Sony Corp.
