Judge Says Migrants Must Be Allowed to Land

An Australian judge ruled that the government illegally detained hundreds of migrants caught trying to sneak into the country and said they must be allowed to land on Australian soil.
The government said it would appeal. If it does not, a naval ship carrying the asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea would be compelled to turn back by Friday.
Last week, civil rights lawyers challenged the government’s decision to refuse entry to the 433 asylum seekers, most of them Afghans, who were rescued at sea last month by a Norwegian cargo ship.
