Giguere Sets Himself Apart

Times Staff Writer

Mighty Duck goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere was flashing a picture of himself as a wide-eyed 7-year boy, sitting on a net next to a yet-to-be-famous Mario Lemieux, after Sunday’s game.

On it, Lemieux had written in French, “Good luck.”

Luck had little to do with the Ducks’ 5-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins Sunday.

Giguere whizzed past Guy Hebert’s Duck record for consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.

His third consecutive shutout pushed him to 200 minutes 15 seconds since giving up a fluke goal to Chicago’s Alexei Zhamnov on Dec. 6.

“I have never been big shutout goalie,” Giguere said. “It’s flattering to set the record. On the other hand, I think you should put whole team in there. They have made it much easier on me. I made the first save and they took away the rebounds.”

Giguere, tied for second in the NHL with four shutouts, saw only 19 shots on goal Sunday.

Giguere is 5-1-1 with a 1.48 goals-against average in his last seven games.
