A man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving Sunday after his pickup truck jumped onto a Lawndale sidewalk, killing two pedestrians and injuring three others, two critically, a sheriff’s deputy said.
William Coy, 41, of Hawthorne was charged with being intoxicated while driving a pickup truck that struck five pedestrians, authorities say.
Five teenagers were standing under the awning of a gas station at the intersection of Inglewood Avenue and 159th Street when the truck hit them shortly before 7 p.m., Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Mike Brown said.
Two died on arrival at a hospital, Brown said. Another two were taken to Harbor/UCLA Medical Center with major critical injuries, and a fifth victim with moderate injuries was taken to another hospital, he said.
