New Tour Still Might Happen

The proposed Major Champions Tour isn’t disappearing from the pro golf landscape, it’s just going to look different than planned, according to the sports television guru responsible for overseeing the project.

“The notion isn’t going away,” Terry Jastrow said. “In fact, I think it’s going to happen, one way or another, next year.”

The tour was intended to feature winners of major championships between the ages of 37 and 55 in seven televised events beginning in 2003, and required 20 of the 35 eligible players to agree to give up their PGA Tour cards in order to play. Although the MCT fell short of that number, Jastrow said that the majority of the players embraced the concept but did not want to damage the PGA Tour.

There are discussions underway about playing MCT events on weekends in November and December and on Mondays and Tuesdays during the regular PGA Tour season. Fox remains the prime broadcast prospect for the new venture.
