Claims of Improper Voter Sign-Ups Probed

The secretary of state’s office is investigating claims that a Republican voter registration drive in the northern San Joaquin Valley improperly signed up voters.
Democrats have complained that vendors hired by Republicans improperly filled out registration cards in Stanislaus, Merced and San Joaquin counties.
People who thought they were signing a petition contend that they were registered to vote Republican and that they learned of their party affiliation when they received sample ballots or arrived at the polls for the March 5 primary.
