Thousands of Kangaroos to Be Shot at Army Base

Nine shooters were preparing to kill as many as 15,000 kangaroos within the 110,000-acre Puckapunyal army base in the southern Australian state of Victoria.
The Defense Department hired the shooters after the kangaroo population exploded to more than 80,000 and the animals began starving, a spokesman said.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be able to monitor the cull, which ecologists recommended.
Several protesters were evicted from the base Sunday when they broke in and tried to feed hay to some of the kangaroos.
