Malaysian police arrested a suspected leader of an Al Qaeda-linked group that officials say plotted bombings of U.S. and other targets. Former university lecturer Wan Min Wan Mat was arrested in the state of Kelantan on charges of threatening national security, Police Chief Norian Mai said.
“He is one of the leaders in the Jemaah Islamiah in Malaysia,” the police chief Norian said.
Singaporean and Malaysian officials say the militant group, which has several cells in Southeast Asia, received help from the Al Qaeda terrorist network in a plot to blow up the U.S. Embassy and other targets in Singapore.
