Former 49er Gets Prison Term for DUI

Former San Francisco 49er Jeff Bregel was sentenced Wednesday to three years in state prison for driving under the influence and causing injury.

Bregel, 38, a former USC All- American lineman, had been arrested five previous times for driving under the influence since 1988.

The Granada Hills resident was driving his mother’s car on Sept. 4 when he rear-ended a car on Rinaldi Street in Granada Hills, prosecutors said.

That car overturned, and the driver reported neck and back pains.

Bregel refused to take a sobriety test.

Bregel was an All-American offensive guard for the USC Trojans in 1985 and 1986 as well as an Academic All-American. He was picked in the second round of the 1987 NFL draft by the 49ers and played with them for three seasons.
