Residents to Decide Local Tax Measure

In March, Coalinga residents will be asked to consider raising their own taxes -- a step that would make the city’s sales tax the state’s second highest.
The Coalinga City Council decided unanimously last week to put the measure on the March ballot, and said it is the only way to deal with the city’s long-term debt and still protect city programs. If approved by voters, the measure would raise every local tax except the business license fee.
The measure would raise the city’s sales tax from 7.875% to 8.625%. The city of Avalon on Catalina Island would still have a higher rate at 8.75%.
San Francisco’s sales tax is 8.5%.
