Schroeder’s Party Crushed in State Votes

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s Social Democratic Party suffered crushing defeats in two state elections, as voters punished his government for tax hikes, rising unemployment and a stagnant economy.
The Social Democrats won 33% in Schroeder’s home state of Lower Saxony, compared with 48% for the conservative Christian Democrats, early returns showed. In Hesse state, the Social Democrats won 27% and the Christian Democrats 50%.
