Northern Calif. Has 2 Quakes in 8 Hours

A 4.4-magnitude earthquake centered 58 miles off the Humboldt County coast Tuesday was the second moderate quake to strike in or near California in a seven-hour period, the U.S. Geological Survey said Wednesday.
The latest quake occurred at 9:43 p.m. off Punta Gorda in the “triple junction” area where the San Andreas fault intersects two tectonic plate boundaries. It was too far off the coast to be strongly felt on land, or cause damage.
The earlier quake, at 2:29 p.m. Tuesday, was a magnitude 4.3, centered near Hollister.
