Villagers fled their homes in remote northwestern Colombia and soldiers patrolled the region after suspected rebels killed at least 16 people, officials said.
Survivors of Thursday night’s killings in Antioquia province told authorities that fighters from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rounded up the victims, accused them of belonging to a rival right-wing paramilitary group and shot them in the head.
About 240 people sought refuge in San Carlos, 130 miles north of Bogota, the capital, said city official Hugo Posada.
