Sweet Memories of Quonset Days

It was with a great deal of nostalgia that I read “Quonset Hut Village Gave WWII Veterans a Foothold in Southland” (L.A. Then and Now, Jan. 26). We arrived in California on March 1946 from Boston. I was 9 and had two little sisters and, of course, my parents.
We lived in a veterans’ dormitory in downtown Los Angeles until there was a Quonset hut available. We moved to our little home in July 1946. My mother fixed it up so cute that the Los Angeles Examiner ran several photos and an article about our family.
My parents were both very active in the Disabled American Veterans chapter in the village. I attended elementary school there, and later Le Conte Junior High School. I also watched movies being filmed in the park; most memorable was “In a Lonely Place,” with Humphrey Bogart.
We did not have much money, but our life was full and very happy. Thanks for bringing back a very happy time in my life.
