The House of Representatives called for a national day of prayer and fasting -- the first since 1863 -- to secure divine blessings for U.S. troops in Iraq and protection from terrorism. The nonbinding resolution, approved 346 to 49, urged President Bush to designate a day.
A few members assented even though they found it a little too theological. “I am a little troubled that we would presume to tell the American people what they should do to secure the blessings and protections of Providence,” said one, Rep. Ted Strickland (D-Ohio).
