Broward County Election Official Is Suspended

Citing mismanagement and dereliction of duty, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush suspended an elections supervisor in southern Florida, saying she had failed to resolve problems in a county that played a key role in the 2000 presidential election.
Miriam Oliphant had been elected to head the Broward County elections office in 2001, but confusion and budget overruns continued to plague the office. Pressure on Bush to remove her grew after a botched September 2002 gubernatorial primary. An interim supervisor was appointed to replace Oliphant. The state Senate must ratify the decision.
