Violence in Kashmir Kills 20, Wounds 37

Suspected Islamic rebels killed a former lawmaker as gun battles and other violence continued across the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir, leaving 20 people dead and 37 wounded, police said.
The ex-lawmaker, Kuka Parrey, 48, died when attackers lobbed grenades and fired at him, police said. Four others died and 20 were wounded in the attack. Until 1994, Parrey was a leader of the Ikhwan ul Muslimeen militant group; he later began aiding government forces fighting the separatists.
Elsewhere, three people were killed and 11 hurt when a bomb went off on a highway in Bijbehara, 30 miles south of Srinagar, police said.
