A 23-year-old Modesto man was shot to death after he tried to take a gun from a sheriff’s deputy answering a domestic disturbance call, authorities said.
The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said Juan Hernandez Garcia was fatally wounded by Deputy Steve Plante after Garcia tried to take a gun from Plante’s partner, Michael Toste.
Sheriff’s spokesman Kelly Huston said Garcia tried twice to grab Toste’s gun. When he nearly got it out of its holster, Huston said, Plante shot him.
