Sources: Grimes Tested Positive for Steroid

Mickey Grimes, stripped of a gold medal in the 100-meter dash at last year’s Pan American Games after testing positive for the stimulant ephedrine, tested positive earlier this year for a banned steroid, sources familiar with the test result said Friday.

Grimes, 27, of Colton, tested positive for norandrosterone in out-of-competition testing done by track and field’s international governing body, the International Assn. of Athletics Federations, said the sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the case is pending.

Grimes was eliminated in the 100-meter semifinals at the U.S. Olympic trials in Sacramento. He won his heat in the 200 meters in 20.39 seconds Friday night. Afterward, when asked about his positive test, he said, “No interviews right now. No. No interviews.”

It is the third alleged positive test result revealed this week involving athletes training with the Southern California-based HSI track club.

Larry Wade, Pan Am Games gold medalist in the 110-meter hurdles, also tested positive for norandrosterone, sources said. He withdrew from the Olympic trials because of an arm injury, a spokeswoman from USA Track & Field said Friday.

Torri Edwards, runner-up in the 100 last Saturday, tested positive for the stimulant nikethamide. She had the fastest time in the 200 quarterfinals.
