Deputy Killed en Route to Airplane Crash

A sheriff’s deputy responding to a Memorial Day plane crash died when his car hit a tree.
A single-engine plane had crashed soon after takeoff from Columbia Airport about 11 a.m. Monday, killing the two people on board. Their names have not been released.
Deputy Dave Grant of the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Department was rushing to the scene with his sirens going when he had to swerve to avoid a car.
