Cubs’ Wood on Disabled List

The Chicago Cubs put pitcher Kerry Wood on the disabled list Thursday after the team decided that they didn’t want the right-hander returning to the rotation until his sore triceps was completely healed. Wood threw 24 pitches in a bullpen session Thursday morning to see whether he was ready to come back.

“Woody’s session went extremely well and he feels about 95%,” General Manager Jim Hendry said. “I don’t want him going out there Sunday at even 95%. We’re going to take the conservative route.”

Wood, 3-3 with a 2.82 earned-run average and 52 strikeouts, will be eligible to come off the disabled list Thursday, an off day for the Cubs.

Michael Wuertz was recalled from triple-A Iowa to take Wood’s spot on the roster.

David Wells said the accident that put him on the disabled list was caused when he tripped over a bar stool in his kitchen.

The Padre left-hander said that after tripping, he knocked a bottle of wine onto the floor and landed on it and a glass he was holding. He severed a tendon in his right wrist.

Barry Bonds was out of the starting lineup for a second straight day because of back spasms, but San Francisco Giant Manager Felipe Alou said no decision has been made on whether to put the slugger on the disabled list.

Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig expressed confidence that a new home for the Montreal Expos will be selected by mid-July.

After missing targets for decisions in 2002 and 2003, baseball officials finally appear to be moving ahead. Washington and Northern Virginia appear to be the leading contenders.

The Colorado Rockies put right-hander Scott Elarton on waivers.... The New York Mets put pitcher Al Leiter on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of outfielder Esix Snead from triple-A Norfolk.
