Police Raids Target Armed Gangs; 12 Die

Up to a dozen people were killed when police raided slum areas of Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, in a move against armed gangs blamed for a recent wave of violence, witnesses said.
“There was a shootout between hooded police in black uniforms and armed gangs,” said a resident of the Sans Fil area. The violence capped 10 weeks of escalating tensions between the interim government and supporters of ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
