Mexico City Mayor’s Criminal Case Advances

From Times Wire Reports

A congressional committee concluded that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with criminal charges against Mexico City’s mayor in a land-use case, a decision that could bar him from running for president in 2006.

The full House must decide whether to strip Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of immunity from prosecution. He has not declared his candidacy but has led polls. Under most interpretations of Mexican law, he cannot run if facing prosecution.
