For Starters, Real Salt Lake Gets the Point

Goalkeeper D.J. Countess made two outstanding saves and Real Salt Lake got a point in its Major League Soccer debut Saturday, playing to a 0-0 tie with the MetroStars on a rainy, wind-whipped night at East Rutherford, N.J.

Countess, one of six former MetroStars on the Salt Lake roster, had one good save in each half, and the weather conditions played a major part in the one in the 18th minute.

Gusting 44 mph winds prevented MetroStar goalkeeper Zach Wells from taking a goal kick because the ball kept rolling away.

Referee Abiodun Okulaja allowed defender Chris Leitch to hold the ball for Wells on his kick.

The wind-aided ball carried almost three quarters of the length of the field and allowed Sergio Galvan Rey to get behind defender Eddie Pope for a breakaway. Rey got off a hard, low shot but Countess knocked it away.

FC Dallas 2, Chicago 1 -- Eddie Johnson and Richard Mulrooney each scored a goal to help FC Dallas open the season with a victory over the Fire at Dallas.

Mulrooney gave FC Dallas a 1-0 lead in the second minute. He fired a shot into the left corner from inside the top of the circle.

Johnson headed a pass from Carey Talley into the right corner of the net in the 47th minute to increase the lead to 2-0.

Kansas City 3, Colorado 2 -- Josh Wolff, Jack Jewsbury and Chris Klein scored to help the Wizards open with a victory at Kansas City, Mo. The Rapids made it close in the second half with goals by substitutes Jeff Cunningham and Mark Chung.

New England 2, San Jose 2 -- Taylor Twellman scored in the 73rd minute to give the Revolution the tie at San Jose.
