Endangered Pelican May Have Been Mutilated
- Share via
The pouch of an endangered brown pelican may have been deliberately slashed in what bird rescue specialists fear could mark a return of the pelican mutilations that occurred several years ago.
The latest bird is one of four brought to specialists in recent weeks with similar injuries. One of the birds died, and three are being treated.
The Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center of Orange County is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone who mutilated the pelicans.
In 2002 and 2003, as many as 20 dead or injured pelicans, some apparently shot, were found.
