A man delivering newspapers for The Times was fatally shot Sunday morning in what police said might have been a robbery attempt.
Alejo Ortiz Amador, 56, was shot in the face near Main and East 95th streets about 5:45 a.m.
Amador was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics who were called after a gunshot was heard in the area, authorities said.
Nearby was his truck, loaded with newspapers. The attacker fled the scene, authorities said.
Jeff Johnson, incoming Times publisher, issued a statement Sunday calling the attack senseless.
He said Amador “had a long relationship with The Times, having worked as a Times employee for many years and more recently as an employee of one of our distributors.”
