China’s supreme court rejected an appeal by U.S. businessman Jude Shao, who is serving a 16-year sentence on tax evasion charges. The case has prompted calls by Washington for his release and criticism of the Chinese legal system.
The court notice to Shao was delivered last week and dated Nov. 22, said Chuck Hoover, a friend who has led lobbying efforts for Shao’s release.
Shao was sentenced in March 2000. Supporters say he was wrongly accused after he refused a bribe demand.
