Georgia Rises to Challenge

Undefeated, fifth-ranked Georgia stayed on course for a trip to the Southeastern Conference championship game with a 27-14 win over No. 8 Tennessee on Saturday.

D.J. Shockley overcame an interception and fumble and was 16 for 27 for 207 yards. He also ran 11 times for 51 yards.

The Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0 SEC) won for the third time in a row in Neyland Stadium and took advantage of Florida’s loss last week to Alabama to control the SEC East standings.

An erratic season continued for the Volunteers (3-2, 2-2), and their offense showed more ineptitude with two costly fumbles and an interception. They also had 12 penalties for 78 yards.

Tennessee’s defense took a major blow before halftime when cornerback Jason Allen was rolled over by Georgia’s 6-foot-7 Justin Pope. Allen was carted off the field, and team officials said he hurt his left hip and was taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately available, but Fulmer said he would be out for a while.

Allen came into the game as the Volunteers’ leading tackler and was their best defender in the secondary.

Georgia also lost a key defender when middle linebacker Tony Taylor left in the first half because of an elbow injury.

No. 11 Louisiana State 34, Vanderbilt 6 -- JaMarcus Russell threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns, and Joseph Addai ran for 102 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers (3-1, 2-1) in Nashville. LSU limited the league’s second-best offense to 138 yards, sacked Jay Cutler four times, intercepted his passes twice and knocked him down often. Vanderbilt (4-2, 2-1) had been averaging 442.6 yards.

No. 13 Florida 35, Mississippi State 9 -- Dallas Baker had a career-high 123 yards receiving and a touchdown at home for the Gators (5-1, 3-1).

Mississippi State (2-4, 0-4) has been outscored 123-26 in four conference games (Auburn, Georgia, LSU and Florida).

Mississippi 27, The Citadel 7 -- Michael Spurlock threw for one touchdown and ran for another at home for the Rebels (2-3), who led 10-7 in the third quarter before scoring the final 17 points against the Division I-AA Bulldogs (2-3) to end a three-game losing streak.

Arkansas 44, Louisiana Monroe 15 -- Darren McFadden rushed for 125 yards, and fellow freshman Felix Jones had 102 at home to help the Razorbacks (2-3) end a three-game losing streak. The Razorbacks, who entered ranked No. 4 in the nation at 277.8 yards rushing per game, had 321 against Louisiana Monroe (2-4).

South Carolina 44, Kentucky 16 -- Blake Mitchell threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third at home to give Coach Steve Spurrier his first SEC victory at South Carolina (3-3, 1-3). The Gamecocks’ head coach moved to 13-0 against the Wildcats (1-4, 0-2).
