Scrushy Surrenders on Bribery Charges

HealthSouth Corp. founder Richard Scrushy, who was acquitted in June of a $2.7-billion fraud, surrendered to federal marshals on charges of bribing former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman.
Scrushy, who denies the accusations, arrived at the federal courthouse in Montgomery, Ala., then went to the marshal’s office. Siegelman, a Democrat, also gave himself up to federal authorities in Montgomery. Two other former state officials also were charged in the case.
Scrushy is accused of making two payments worth $500,000 to the Alabama Education Fund, a Siegelman lottery campaign vehicle, for a seat on the state’s Certificate of Need Review Board, which decides on hospital expansions.
