Freshman quarterback Matt Barkley passed for three first-half touchdowns to lead Santa Ana Mater Dei to a 20-0 victory over Bellflower St. John Bosco.
The visiting Monarchs (5-3, 3-0), ranked No. 10 in the Southland by The Times, are the only unbeaten team in the Serra League and are one win from clinching a playoff spot.
Barkley connected with Skyler Webster (32 yards), Robert Dubrish (44 yards) and Travis McNaughton (six yards) for touchdowns.
“He had some nice completions and I think we made some nice calls,” Mater Dei Coach Bruce Rollinson said of Barkley. “He’s getting better each week.”
Mater Dei went to more of a run-oriented offense in the second half. Ahmed Mokhtar finished with 115 yards in 24 carries for the Monarchs.
Lawrence Doff had 45 yards in 13 carries for St. John Bosco (3-5, 1-2).
