Curtain falls on ‘Dolittle’

Disappointing ticket sales have brought an abrupt end to the planned 2005-06 national tour of the Leslie Bricusse musical “Doctor Dolittle.” Launched in Pittsburgh in August, the tour will close Sunday in Hershey, Pa.
The family musical, produced by Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and Nederlander Presentations Inc., had been scheduled for tour stops in multiple cities well into 2006. Dates included a July run at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre, presented by Nederlander’s Broadway/LA.
“While we are extremely proud of ‘Doctor Dolittle’ on stage, it simply is not translating to ticket sales and finding its audience,” producer Nick Scandalios of Nederlander Presentations Inc. said in a written statement.
Broadway/LA spokesperson Wayne McWorter said Thursday that a “Dolittle” replacement for the Pantages had not been confirmed.
