A 21-year-old Salem, Ore., woman is the lone survivor of a weekend crash that killed her 3-year-old son and three others when their car plunged into an icy canal.
The five, returning to Oregon from Southern California, were northbound on Interstate 5 about 80 miles north of Sacramento when their vehicle struck a guardrail and ran off the road between 3:15 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
The vehicle was submerged in 15 to 18 feet of murky water.
Sandra Gonzalez Mojica made it safely to the bank and then tried to save the others. Her son, sister, father and boyfriend died, officials said.
