Energy Agency Waives Laboratory’s Fines

The U.S. Department of Energy said Monday that it had assessed, but waived, a nearly $589,000 fine to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for safety violations, including a series of incidents in which several lab workers were exposed to low-level radiation.
No one was injured in the incidents, which occurred between April and August 2004, officials said. The lab, cited for a “deficient safety culture,” is exempt from paying the fine because it is managed by the nonprofit University of California.
