Republican Comptroller to Run as Independent

State Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn turned her back on the Republican Party and announced in Austin that she would run for governor as an independent.
The move allows Strayhorn to avoid a potentially ugly primary battle against Republican Gov. Rick Perry.
Strayhorn has been an outspoken critic of Perry’s leadership for several years.
