Group Opposes Bill for National Language

An Asian immigrants rights group announced Saturday that it opposes legislation designating English as the country’s national language.
The Los Angeles-based Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California said the legislation being debated in Congress would demonize immigrants and would not be accompanied by an increase in funding for English classes.
“The immigrant communities we work with understand the importance of speaking English,” said Karin Wang, the organization’s vice president. “We need the resources to teach people.”
