Yankees Rally Late, Then Beat Mets Later

Pinch-hitter Andy Phillips lined a run-scoring single in the 11th inning to lift the New York Yankees to an improbable 5-4 win over the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.

Johnny Damon hustled to beat a double-play relay that capped a four-run rally in the ninth inning against Mets closer Billy Wagner.

Phillips, hitting only .174, delivered a two-out single against Jorge Julio (1-2) after Miguel Cairo drew a leadoff walk and stole two bases in the 11th.

Mariano Rivera (2-3) pitched two scoreless innings to get the win.

Pedro Martinez tossed seven shutout innings, and Carlos Delgado and Cliff Floyd homered for the Mets. Martinez struck out eight and gave up four hits.

Detroit 7, Cincinnati 6 -- A throwing error by shortstop Felipe Lopez allowed Carlos Guillen to score the winning run in the 10th inning, and the Tigers overcame Ken Griffey Jr.’s grand slam at Detroit.

The Tigers trailed 6-5 with two out in the ninth, but Curtis Granderson tied the score with a homer against David Weathers (1-2), who has blown three straight save chances.

Boston 8, Philadelphia 4 -- Josh Beckett hit a solo homer and a run-scoring single and pitched seven solid innings to lead the Red Sox at Philadelphia.

Beckett (6-1) gave up four runs and six hits to win his third straight start and became the first Red Sox pitcher to go deep since Marty Pattin on Sept. 26, 1972.

Washington 8, Baltimore 3 -- Alfonso Soriano homered for the third straight game and drove in three runs to lead the Nationals at Washington. Ryan Zimmerman scored the tiebreaking run during a four-run sixth inning on an errant pickoff throw by catcher Ramon Hernandez.

Tampa Bay 4, Florida 3 -- Russell Branyan hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth inning to give the Devil Rays the win at St. Petersburg, Fla. The Marlins have lost six straight, and it was the fourth time in five games they have led in the ninth only to wind up losing.

Minnesota 16, Milwaukee 10 -- Michael Cuddyer drove in a career-high five runs and Joe Mauer had four runs batted in for the Twins at Milwaukee. The Twins scored six runs in the first inning as Brewers starter Ben Hendrickson failed to retire any of the six batters he faced.

Seattle 6, San Diego 3 -- Gil Meche pitched a season-high 7 2/3 innings and Kenji Johjima hit his second homer in as many games to lift the Mariners over the Padres at Seattle. Khalil Greene hit his ninth home run for the Padres, who lost for the fourth time in five games after beginning May by winning 13 of 14.

San Francisco 4, Oakland 2 -- Ray Durham hit a go-ahead single to score Omar Vizquel in the 10th inning, and Steve Finley had a sacrifice fly to lead the Giants over the Athletics at Oakland.

St. Louis 4, Kansas City 2 -- Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning at Kansas City, Mo., to help the Cardinals hand the Royals their eighth straight loss.

Colorado 5, Toronto 1 -- Jeff Francis took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Brad Hawpe tripled home two runs for the Rockies at Denver.

Texas 6, Houston 0 -- Kevin Millwood pitched seven sharp innings and Michael Young drove in two runs for the Rangers at Houston.

Pittsburgh 9, Cleveland 6 -- Jason Bay homered twice and drove in four runs at Cleveland to help the Pirates improve to 4-18 on the road.

Arizona 13, Atlanta 0 -- Brandon Webb threw a four-hitter to become the National League’s first seven-game winner, and the Diamondbacks routed the Braves at Phoenix.
