No killer stories, no serial killers

AFTER reading about Jack the Ripper’s murder case in Rosemary McClure’s fine article [“The London Prowl,” Oct. 29], I am convinced that the news media have the power to stop or curtail serial killings. By refusing to give the killers publicity, the press would rob them of the attention they seek.

An ancient Greek legend tells of an assassin who murdered a beloved citizen so his name would be remembered. The Greeks punished the assassin by agreeing never to mention his name.
