17 dead as army battles Kurd rebels

Thousands of troops backed by helicopters launched operations against Kurdish guerrillas in southeast Turkey that left 10 members of the security forces and seven rebels dead over the weekend.
Most of the deaths among soldiers and local guards came in clashes with the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, in the provinces of Tunceli, Bingol, Bitlis and Sirnak, near the Iraqi border. One soldier died after stepping on a mine.
