Editor’s note

Welcome to Opinion, the section formerly known as Current. This weekly section, which is repackaged with the Book Review, will provide a mix of editorials, letters, cartoons and signed opinion pieces. The name change brings us full circle: The section was known as Opinion from the late 1960s until mid-2005.

We are also offering new content online at latimes.com/opinion: Opinion Daily (a column every weekday from a member of the editorial pages staff), Blowback (in which readers get space to respond to articles and editorials) and Dust-Up (a weeklong debate between two people with contrasting views on the news).

As a result of the changes, the regular Op-Ed columns written by Gregory Rodriguez and Niall Ferguson move to Monday’s paper. Meghan Daum’s column moves to Saturday.
