• at New York 16, Chicago 3: The Yankees tied a franchise record with eight home runs, but Alex Rodriguez was hitless in five at-bats and stayed at 499. Rodriguez is hitless in 16 at-bats since he connected against Kansas City on July 25. Hideki Matsui homered twice, and Jorge Posada, Bobby Abreu, Melky Cabrera, Johnny Damon and Robinson Cano hit one apiece.
• Texas 3, at Cleveland 1: Brandon McCarthy (5-7) won for the first time since May 27 and took a shutout into the seventh inning before Ryan Garko homered. Fausto Carmona (13-5) had been unbeaten in five July starts and was bidding to become the majors’ second 14-game winner.
• Toronto 2, at Tampa Bay 0: Jesse Litsch (4-4) threw 6 2/3 shutout innings and the Blue Jays won for the seventh time in 10 games. The Devil Rays have lost 26 of 33 since June 25.
• at Minnesota 5, Kansas City 3: Torii Hunter homered, his 22nd, and Carlos Silva (9-11) cruised through eight innings as the Twins won their fourth game in a row.
• at Oakland 7, Detroit 3: Kurt Suzuki and Jack Cust each hit two-run singles in the sixth inning to help the Athletics end a four-game skid. Dan Haren (13-3) won his third consecutive start, this one against fellow All-Star Justin Verlander (11-4).
• Baltimore 5, at Boston 3: Erik Bedard (11-4) gave up two hits over six innings to win his seventh consecutive decision despite two home runs by David Ortiz.
• Angels 8, at Seattle 0: Gary Matthews Jr. hit two home runs and John Lackey (13-6) produced his first complete game this season. It was his first shutout since July 14 against Tampa Bay.
