Cleveland 5, at Kansas City 3 (11 innings): Travis Hafner and Victor Martinez singled runs home with two out in the 11th inning for the Indians, who scored a run in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. Hafner’s single off John Bale, the sixth Royals pitcher, scored Franklin Gutierrez, who led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Grady Sizemore, who was hit by a Bale pitch, scored the second run of the inning on a Martinez single.
Boston 11, at Chicago 1: David Ortiz hit a two-run homer, and J.D. Drew and Bobby Kielty ended long homerless droughts to back Julian Tavarez’s first win since late June.
at Tampa Bay 7, Oakland 4: Carlos Pena hit two homers, and Joel Guzman had a two-run triple during a three-run fifth inning as the Devil Rays won three in a row for the first time since the middle of June.
Minnesota 11, at Baltimore 3: The Twins ended Erik Bedard’s nine-game winning streak and completed a four-game sweep of the Orioles, getting two triples and two RBIs from Jason Bartlett.
at Texas 5, Seattle 3: Sammy Sosa’s 605th home run was his first in a month, and Vicente Padilla gave up only one run pitching into the seventh inning as the Rangers beat the AL wild-card leading Mariners.
at Detroit 5, New York 4: Curtis Granderson led off the first with an inside-the-park homer and the Tigers went on to victory.
at Angels 3, Toronto 1: Kelvim Escobar recorded his career-high 15th victory, Garret Anderson homered and the Angels earned a split of the four-game series.
