Southern comfort

Re “Definitions of whiteness amid the Delta blues,” Current, Jan. 14

I am a transplant from the Mississippi Gulf Coast who has lived in L.A. for 13 years. It’s pretty typical for folks in L.A. to misunderstand and casually badmouth Mississippi, so it was refreshing to read Gregory Rodriguez’s piece. It was informative, nonjudgmental and eye-opening. Indeed, Mississippi has a sad, horrific past regarding civil rights and race relations, but at some point we must look to the future and try to learn from those terrible moments in history.

Thanks for providing good, solid information like this. It really helps in creating a greater understanding of what Mississippi is, not what it used to be.
