It’s the least business can do

Re “A living wage we can live with,” Current, Jan. 14
Raising the minimum wage is not only the correct thing to do from a social standpoint, it’s the correct thing to do from a financial and business standpoint. I know people often argue that an increase will hurt small businesses. The fact is, many small businesses say an increase will not hurt their bottom lines.
The shortsighted also say that these minimum-wage jobs were never meant to be someone’s sole source of income. Well, despite what they were meant to be, minimum-wage jobs are often the only source of income for many single-parent families and for many senior citizens who find they have to work after retirement. Give these people the opportunity to support themselves and contribute to the economy.
