Warren’s call to action

Re “Campaign calls for Christians to adopt needy kids,” May 13

Contrary to this article, Saddleback Church Pastor Rick Warren did not come to an adoption summit hosted by Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs, Colo., to “criticize a narrow focus on abortion, homosexuality and pornography as un-Christian.” He came to exhort churches nationwide to find room for the 115,000 U.S. children awaiting adoption.

Is the quote attributed to Warren accurate? Sure. But it’s hardly a criticism of the “religious right,” as the article states. It’s a call to action to Christians everywhere to muster the compassion to help children in need. That is not, by the way, a “fledgling” effort for Christians -- as the article says in one of its latter paragraphs. We have been at the forefront of adoption since the days of the Roman empire, when Christians were rescuing discarded babies from baskets floating in rivers. What made our two-day summit unique was that we were encouraging cooperation among congregations and ministries focused on adoption.
