Domingo to kick off opera season

Los Angeles Opera has changed the plans for its season-opening weekend.
Instead of the previously announced “Placido Domingo and Friends Gala,” Domingo, L.A. Opera’s general director, will conduct the company’s first performance of Verdi’s Requiem on Sept. 9.
Soloists for the 2 p.m. performance will be soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, and tenor Jonas Kaufmann and bass Rene Pape, both making their company debuts. The L.A. Opera Chorus will be prepared by Grant Gershon in his debut season as the troupe’s chorus master.
The company said it decided to make the change because the soloists and chorus were already scheduled to appear for the gala.
