* at Ottawa, 3, Toronto 2: Daniel Alfredsson scored twice, including the winner on a power play with 4:59 remaining.
* at N.Y. Rangers 5, Florida 2: The Rangers were able to turn a 2-1 deficit into a victory behind newcomer Chris Drury. Brett McLean and Nathan Horton scored for the Panthers.
* at Tampa Bay 3, New Jersey 1: Vincent Lecavalier scored twice, including a tiebreaking goal with 3:52 left in the third, spoiling Brent Sutter’s debut as Devils coach. New Jersey is opening the season with a nine-game trip, which will allow construction of the team’s new arena in Newark to be completed for the home opener Oct. 27 against Ottawa.
* at Nashville 4, Colorado 0: Jason Arnott scored two goals and Chris Mason made 35 saves to lead the Predators.
* at Minnesota 1, Chicago 0: Niklas Backstrom made 27 saves and Pierre-Marc Bouchard scored. Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 23 shots for the Blackhawks.
* at Edmonton, 3, San Jose 2: Jarret Stoll scored in the shootout to lift the Oilers. Joe Thornton tied the score on a power play with 11 seconds left in regulation for the Sharks.
* at Phoenix 3, St. Louis 2: Rookie Daniel Winnik’s first NHL goal stood as the winner. Winnik converted a centering pass from Martin Hanzal at 7:30 of the third period to extend the Coyotes’ lead to 3-0. Keith Tkachuk and Brad Boyce scored late in the third to pull the Blues to 3-2.
* Philadelphia 3, at Calgary 2: Daniel Briere scored his first two goals in a Flyers uniform, spoiling Mike Keenan’s regular-season debut behind the Flames’ bench.
