Don’t get upset

Hey, Michigan fans! Don’t worry that the Wolverines were beaten by Division I-AA Appalachian State, 34-32, in the season opener. I’m sure you’ll be entitled to a rematch in the BCS championship game.

If Cal or UCLA (or, God forbid, USC) had been beaten by Appalachian State, the long knives would already be out. Critics would be referring to the Pac-10 as overrated, under-scheduled, soft and spoiled. But you didn’t hear any of that about the Big Ten after Michigan’s loss. All you heard was that it was the most improbable upset in college history, and that their coach, Lloyd Carr, should be fired.

Actually, I feel bad for Oregon. Having to face a Michigan team that’s been fed raw meat and gunpowder all week, champing at the bit for an opportunity to redeem themselves, will be a tall order. Go, Ducks!

USC beats lowly Idaho in an uninspired fashion and receives more than half of the front page coverage in the Sunday Football Special College Pullout. I guess if or when USC beats a ranked team, The Times will devote the entire paper to covering that victory. Maybe the Times should rename itself the Daily Trojan.

As I watched the USC-Idaho game on TV, I couldn’t believe the chutzpah of the school to put advertising between the goal posts each time a field goal or extra point was attempted. If there had been a blocked kick or a fake attempted, the viewers would not have been able to see the play.

Every time I see one of those advertisements I’ll remember how little regard that company had for the fans and players.
