Zito takes shutout into ninth inning

SAN FRANCISCO — Barry Zito carried a shutout into the ninth inning, Pablo Sandoval hit a home run and San Francisco moved to within a game of Colorado for the National League wild-card lead with a 5-3 victory Saturday.
Brad Hawpe hit a home run and pinch-hitter Seth Smith drove in two runs for the Rockies.
Zito (9-11) gave up one run and eight hits over 8 1/3 innings.
