GAME OF THE DAY
No. 1 Santa Ana Mater Dei (25-0, 9-0 Trinity League)
at No. 22 Orange Lutheran (22-4, 8-1)
Tonight at 7:30
Why it matters: Mater Dei could finish Trinity League play and the regular season unbeaten and take another step toward its first undefeated season since 1985. But Lutheran has been playing some of its best basketball of the season lately. The Lancers are coming off a 22-point victory over then-No. 25 North Hollywood Campbell Hall on Saturday and are eager to avenge a 102-77 loss to the Monarchs on Jan. 23. Lutheran has won 14 of its last 15 games, with the only defeat coming against Mater Dei.
WEDNESDAY’S RESULT
No. 10 Torrance Bishop Montgomery 83,
Los Angeles Cathedral 64
Leading contributors: Senior guard Brandon Bibbins scored 21 points and senior guard Michael Panaggio had 18 for visiting Bishop Montgomery. Senior guard Brandon Parga scored 32 points and junior guard Andrew Clark had 21 for Cathedral.
The scoop: Bishop Montgomery made 15 of 24 three-point attempts and was never challenged after taking a 12-point halftime lead. “When we shoot the ball that well, it’s tough for them,” Knights Coach Doug Mitchell said.
Why it matters: Bishop Montgomery clinched the Del Rey League championship and capped a strong week in which it also defeated No. 15 Gardena Serra by 17 points. “It gives us a lot of momentum for the playoffs,” said Mitchell, whose team will probably be seeded No. 1 in the Division IV-AA bracket when it is released Sunday.
Records: Bishop Montgomery 23-3, 7-1; Cathedral 12-15, 5-3.
