Long Beach State defeats UC Santa Barbara

at Long Beach State 76, UC Santa Barbara 64: Casper Ware scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half in the Big West Conference opener for both schools. Long Beach State, 6-7 overall and 1-0 in the Big West, held multiple double-digit leads in the second half, but the Gauchos cut the lead to 68-61 on a three-pointer by James Powell with 1:29 remaining. The 49ers secured the victory by making eight of 10 free throws the rest of the way. Chris Devine led Santa Barbara (6-7, 0-1) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Powell scored 10 points. Santa Barbara led in the first half before the 49ers finished on a 17-3 run over the final 8:30 for a 36-29 halftime lead.
Pacific 84, at Cal State Northridge 78 (OT): Anthony Brown scored 17 points and Michael Kirby scored seven of his 14 points in overtime for Pacific in a Big West game. Pacific (8-4, 1-0) led 78-75 before Kirby made a three-pointer with 32 seconds left in overtime, and he secured the victory on the next possession with two free throws. Deon Tresvant led Northridge (4-8, 1-1) with 21 points, including a three-pointer that tied the score with 37 seconds left in the second half.
at UC Riverside 91, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 57: Kyle Austin scored 24 points to lead the Highlanders in a Big West game. Austin, a transfer from USC, was nine for 18 from the field as the Highlanders (8-4, 1-0) outscored the Mustangs 49-19 in the second half. Cal Poly led 36-33 late in the first half before UC Riverside went on a 23-4 run to break the game open. At one point during the run, Cal Poly went 9:55 without a field goal. Titus Shelton scored 17 points for the Mustangs (3-8, 0-1).
WOMEN
at UCLA 60, Oregon State 53: The Bruins rallied from an early 19-2 deficit and went on to win the Pac-10 Conference opener for both schools. Bruins sophomore guard Nina Earl led the comeback win with 15 points on seven-for-12 shooting from the field and five steals. The Bruins (10-2, 1-0) ended a six-game winning streak by Oregon State (9-2, 0-1). The Bruins managed to make only one of 11 field goals to start the game and found themselves down by 17 points, 19-2, with 10:29 left in the half.
at USC 66, Oregon 56: Nadia Parker led the Trojans with 17 points, and Brynn Cameron scored 13 and Briana Gilbreath had 10 in the Pac-10 opener for both schools. Hailey Dunham had a career-high 10 rebounds for the Trojans (7-5, 1-0). Oregon (3-7, 0-1) shot 41.5% in the game.
